Who We Are:

Women of MENA is a digital publication at the intersection of culture and gender studies. Our platform provides space for open dialogue meant to unpack the gender dynamics of the region and share women’s stories. Our mission is rooted in inclusivity for people who identify as women, genderqueer, and/or nonbinary.

This organization is a registered student organization of Cornell University.

What We Do:

With a team of student writers, editors, and designers, Women of MENA hosts articles on our website and across social media platforms. Our articles cover two main areas:

  1. Features that highlight the voices of students, artists, writers, scholars, entrepreneurs, creators, activists, and more through features and in-depth interviews.
  2. Culture and gender analysis through a contemporary and historical lens. This includes reviews of literature, poetry, film, and art from the region, analysis of different cultures or ethnic groups, or a look into the religious practices of a particular group. Often gender studies intersects with a multitude of other topics, including but not limited to: politics, economics, history, public health, environmental studies, etc.
Our first publication. April 2022.

Our Goals:

Articles are based on student research and interviews of journalists, researchers, and Professors who are experts of the MENA region.

  1. Women of MENA will allow students to explore the nuances of the MENA region in a way that goes beyond politics and security issues as is often presented in the media. We offer an alternative to the typical narrative of war and conflict in the MENA region that is often presented in the US.
  2. We also seek to create a community for students at Cornell and across universities who are connected to the region and want to tell their stories.
  3. We seek to be an approachable and interactive platform that students can engage with on social media and through our website. Our articles are at the intersection of journalism, academia, and personal blogs. We tell individual student stories while rooting our articles in research and academia.
